AMANN NAMED TO 'KENNEDY CENTER' BOARD OF DIRECTORS

April 15, 2009

Says he is honored to be part of the work of this historic rehabilitation center

MILFORD-James A. Amann (D-Milford), the only declared candidate for the Democratic nomination for governor in 2010 and former Speaker of the state House of Representatives is joining the board of directors of the Kennedy Center in Trumbull. Kennedy Center president and chief executive officer Martin D. Schwartz notified Amann of his election to the board for a three-year term and invited the former speaker to an orientation session at the Center's board meeting on April 27th.

"It is a great honor to be asked to serve on the board of this very important and historic organization," Amann said. "Just as the Center's mission statement says, it 'promotes the empowerment of consumers with diverse abilities, disabilities and experiences toward optimal participation and inclusion in community.' It's that type of general approach that I have taken in my years in the legislature, as Speaker and now as I pursue the governor's office," Amann said.

The Kennedy Center, Inc., a private, community-based rehabilitation organization, actively responds to needs of persons with disabilities by offering innovative, comprehensive community services. The Kennedy Center was founded in 1951 with the dream of a group of parents who hoped that their children would have the same opportunities as all other children, regardless of their abilities or disabilities. Named for Bridgeport native Evelyn Kennedy, The Kennedy Center has been a driving force in providing advocacy and service to persons with disabilities since its inception.

The founders of the Center were instrumental in developing the legislation requiring school systems to provide educational services for children with special needs. The Center opened the first home for adults with disabilities in Connecticut licensed by the State Department of Mental Retardation.
